The Importance of Beauty Sleep for Our Skin

Come the end of the day, even if all you’re craving is to crawl into your bed, accomplishing as much may not always be the easiest. More errands pop up- dinner, maybe some laundry you forgot to do, the kids need help with homework, etc. Exhaustion compounds and by the time you finally get to lie down and close your eyes you feel as though you’re opening them right back up to the sound of your alarm. Not very restful, is it?

So what kind of toll does this take on your skin? While we sleep our bodies take this time to essentially repair damage; most systems are in a heightened anabolic state, accentuating the growth and rejuvenation of the immune, nervous, skeletal, and muscular systems. Our skin is included in this and it will be the first to portray that you’ve not gotten enough rest. Lack of sleep causes blood vessels to dilate, causing the look of dark circles. You’re body will retain water, causing puffy eyes. During this time though, your skin truly renews itself. New cells develop and replace the old ones. Not allowing your skin the time needed to do this will give your complexion a tired and dull appearance and who wants that?

While you may not always be able to add more time to your unconscious state, you can better prepare yourself for catching those Z’s and give yourself a more restful sleep. Simply crashing onto your bed and pulling the covers over your head is no way to end the day. Ritualizing your sleep regimen can help train both your mind and body to accept that-“Hey, it’s the end of the day, time to relax!” This may feel like just one more thing you have to do before finally getting to sleep, but you’ll really thank yourself in the morning.

1) Start with washing your face. Simple, right? Sometimes it’s easier said than done, but we’re concentrating on your skin health-so do it. You’re removing all of the debris and environmental gunk of the day from your skin, giving it a breath of fresh air (no really, air pollutants are a huge factor in causing dryness, premature aging, dull skin, clogged pores, skin irritation, inflammation, and allergies). Follow with a moisturizer to re-hydrate and protect your skin.

2) Reach for the stars! …or your toes. Stretch and let go of the day’s tension. Are you on your feet all day? Your lower back probably kills you, doesn’t it? Touch your toes and hold for a few breaths. Slowly come back up- arching your back while you do so. This loosens those tight muscles and helps to align vertebrae. How about my office workers? Neck and shoulders, right? Dip your chin down into your chest, hold; roll to the left, hold; roll to the right, hold; repeat until your neck no longer feels like it’s made out of tight rubber bands.

3) Take a few deep breaths now. You’re increasing oxygen flow to your brain and muscles. This reduces anxiety and tension. Take air all the way into your abdomen, not just your chest. For really deep breathing you need to expand your diaphragm as well. Breathing exercises should be deep, slow, rhythmic, and through the nose, not through the mouth. The most important parts of deep breathing are to be regulating your breaths three to four seconds in, and three to four seconds out.

These are easy tasks that can go a long way in improving not just your skin, but your overall health as well. After doing this your work for the day is done! All you have to do is close your eyes and you’ll wake up feeling rejuvenated and with much healthier skin!

Thousands of years ago, both the Chinese and Ancient Egyptian priests and physicians were using essential oils in their daily lives to combat a variety of problems. From anxiety to nausea, to lift emotions and even as an offering to the gods. Scientists today have discovered that essential oils have the ability to inhibit the growth of tumors and kill certain bacteria, like the strand that causes E coli.

When you smell an essential oil, your olfactory bulb fires off signals to the limbic system, which is the part of your brain that controls your emotions. Your physical and emotional reaction is dependent on which oil is used. Here are a few essential oils that you can use in your everyday life for various ailments:

-Peppermint oil to make you feel more alert.

– Lavender to help you sleep better. Studies have shown that lavender increases brain activity associated with relaxation and deep sleep. For women, lavender can help alleviate PMS symptoms and reduce pain.

– Grapefruit to help you reduce your appetite.

– Eucalyptus to stop your runny nose. Hang it in your shower and the eucalyptus in the steam will help clear your stuffy nose and reduce pressure.

– Sweet Orange to reduce your anxiety levels. (other citrus oils have been known to have similar results). You can also try a combination of lavender, neroli and chamomile to help ease your stress levels.

– Ginger to reduce nausea

– Black pepper to help you quit smoking. The scent will help reduce cravings.

– Rosemary to improve concentration.

10 Things you didn’t know were horrible for your skin!

A woman of today knows that taking care of your skin is vital. We cleanse, exfoliate, moisturize and get the oh-so-important facial. But there are a few things that could be wrecking havoc on your skin and you may not even realize it.

#1) Sleeping with your make-up on

Yours truly used to be a big offender of this. If you’ve ever forgotten after a long day you probably know the results the next morning. Falling asleep with your make-up can clog your pores, and can lead to bacterial infections and acne. If you really can’t seem to remember, try and keep your make-up remover wipes by your bed.

#2) Squinting your eyes

If you constantly forget your sunglasses, think your contact/glasses prescription needs to be updated, then now’s the time! Eye protection and the proper lens can help prevent fine lines, wrinkles and sun damage. Are you calling your eye doctor yet?

#3) your pillow case is dirty

How often do you change your pillow case? If you can’t remember then it’s been too long. Especially if you’re an offender of #1. If you don’t change your pillowcase regularly the skin you shed at night can build up causing clogged pores and a build up of bacteria. We recommend changing your pillowcase at least once a week.

#4) Too much chlorine

it’s a big one in the summer. Hanging in the pool is great but can dehydrate your skin. Even after a shower, chlorine can still adhere to your skin. Make sure when you shower after that pool that really give yourself a good scrub.

#5) Too Much Sodium

Too much sodium can leave your skin dry and lackluster. Cut back on those salty sweets and remember to hydrate.

#6) Not enough water

It’s the BEST thing you can do for your skin. Especially if you have an excess of sodium, not enough water can leave your skin dull and dry. Hydrate people!

#7) Long, hot showers.

This one is tough, because most off love the relief a long, hot shower can bring. While it can be great, it can also strip the epidermis of it’s outer layer. To avoid dry and scaly skin, try to limit your time in the steamy shower. you can always switch it to a colder setting at the end of your shower. This will help your pores close after the heat opens them (It’s also great for your hair!)

#8) Talking on the phone

think about how often you use your phone. Now think about how often you clean it. If you notice a breakout around your jaw line it may be because of your phone. Clean it. and often.

#9)wearing dirty sunglasses

Just like your phone, this frequently used eye wear can can be neglected. A build up of bacteria can lead to breakouts on the bridge of your nose and clog your pores.

#10) Skipping Meals

This one may seem surprising, but if your not in taking enough fluid and getting the proper nourishment, your skin may pay the price. Try to include some vitamin C and vitamin E to your routine.
